Apple Refreshes iPad Mini: A Minor Update with Major Improvements

Apple has officially announced the new iPad mini (2024) through a straightforward press release, marking one of the smallest updates in iPad history. The highlight of this update is the powerful Apple A17 Pro chip, which debuted in last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. This new mini replaces the 2021 model and is set to receive Apple Intelligence with the gradual rollout of iPadOS 18.1 later this month.

Key Features of the iPad Mini (2024)

A17 Pro Chip

The most significant addition to the iPad mini (2024) is the advanced A17 Pro chip, bringing enhanced performance and efficiency. This update ensures that users can enjoy smoother multitasking and a more responsive experience.

Increased Storage and Connectivity

The base storage has doubled from 64GB to 128GB, providing more space for apps, photos, and videos. Additionally, the iPad mini now supports Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and a faster USB Type-C 3.1 Gen2 port, ensuring faster data transfers and better connectivity.

Apple Pencil Pro Support

The new iPad mini adds support for the Apple Pencil Pro stylus, expanding creative possibilities for users, whether for note-taking or artistic endeavors.

New Color Options

The device comes in a fresh Blue color, joining the existing options of Purple, Starlight, and Space Gray.

Display and Camera

The display remains unchanged, featuring an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina IPS LCD with a resolution of 1,488 x 2,266 pixels and a 3:2 aspect ratio. However, the refresh rate is still capped at 60Hz, as Apple reserves the ProMotion (120Hz) technology for its Pro models.

The iPad mini retains its dual 12MP cameras, which have benefitted from the improved Image Signal Processor (ISP) from the A15 Pro chip, now offering Smart HDR 4 support for better photography.

User Experience and Battery Life

Touch ID continues to provide secure biometric unlocks and app purchases. The battery remains at 19.3 watt-hours, with Apple claiming it can last up to 10 hours of browsing or video watching over Wi-Fi. The retail package includes a 20W USB-C power adapter.

Accessories and Pricing

Apple is also launching a new Smart Folio case for $59. The iPad mini (2024) starts at $499/€599/£499 for the 128GB Wi-Fi only model, while the version with cellular connectivity is priced at $649/€769/£649. Pre-orders open today, with shipments and sales scheduled to begin on October 23.
