Tata Group Expands Semiconductor Ambitions, Partners with Taiwan for Dholera Chip Plant

 

Introduction

 Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran has unveiled ambitious plans to establish a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Dholera, Gujarat. This strategic move aims to bolster India's chipmaking capabilities, with talks set to conclude by March 2024.

Overview of Tata Group's Semiconductor Venture: According to a recent report by ET, Tata Group is poised to commence construction soon, signaling significant progress towards realizing its semiconductor ambitions. Initially focusing on producing mature nodes of 65 nm, the plan involves subsequent transitions to 48 nm and then 28 nm nodes, catering to a spectrum of applications including graphic processor units (GPU), consumer electronics, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Key Plant Details

 The semiconductor facility's initial capacity is estimated at 25,000 wafers per month, equating to a production output of 700-1,000 semiconductor chips daily.



Partnership with Taiwanese Foundries

 In a strategic collaboration, Tata Group is engaging with Taiwanese giants United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC). UMC, the world's second-largest foundry, reported a revenue of NT$ 222.53 billion in 2023, while PSMC, the seventh-largest pure-play foundry, recently inaugurated a $5.3 billion chip manufacturing plant in Japan, boasting net sales of NT$ 3.429 billion in 2023. Both companies, headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, bring invaluable expertise and resources to the partnership.

 

Chairman Chandrasekaran's Statement

Chairman Chandrasekaran expressed optimism about the venture, stating, "We are about to complete negotiations for the semiconductor fab and start in 2024," underscoring Tata Group's commitment to driving innovation and technological advancement in India's semiconductor industry.
