Tata's Semiconductor Plant in Assam to Revolutionize Chip Manufacturing with Native Technology

A Landmark Initiative:
 

Tata Group has embarked on a groundbreaking venture by setting up a state-of-the-art semiconductor assembly and testing plant in Jagiroad, Morigaon district, Assam. The project, approved by the Union Cabinet on February 29, 2024, is a testament to India's growing prowess in the high-tech manufacturing sector. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, alongside Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, laid the foundation stone for the Rs 27,000-crore facility.

Massive Production Capacity:

This plant is poised to be a game-changer, with the capacity to produce an astounding 48.3 million chips daily using indigenously developed technologies. The chips manufactured here will serve a myriad of applications, from electric vehicles to communication and network infrastructure, highlighting the versatility and critical importance of this initiative.
 

Boosting Employment and Economy:

The economic impact of this plant is substantial. It is expected to generate 27,000 jobs, including 15,000 direct and 12,000 indirect employment opportunities, providing a significant boost to the local and national economy. Vaishnaw emphasized that the semiconductor industry acts as a foundational industry, catalyzing downstream employment and fostering a complex ecosystem of ancillary units.

Focus on Talent Development:

Aligned with the India Semiconductor Mission, there is a concerted effort to cultivate talent in the semiconductor industry. Nine institutes in the northeast, including NITs in various states and North Eastern Hill University, are spearheading initiatives to develop 85,000 skilled professionals, ensuring a steady pipeline of talent for this burgeoning sector.
 

"Act East" Policy in Action:

This project underscores Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Act East" policy, aiming to bolster economic development in the northeastern states. Vaishnaw lauded this milestone as a pivotal moment in India's semiconductor program, setting a precedent for future high-tech manufacturing projects in the region.
 

Future Prospects

In addition to the Assam plant, Tata Electronics is also setting up India’s first wafer fabrication unit in Dholera, Gujarat. With an investment of Rs 91,000 crore, this facility will have the capacity to produce 50,000 wafers per month, with the first chip expected to roll out by December 2026.
